THIS WINTER CHECKLIST WILL HELP YOU PREPARE FOR COLDER WEATHER

Almost before you know it, summer is on its way out and autumn is only too happy to take its place. It’s easy to look around and be overwhelmed by everything there is to do in order to get ready for the colder weather ahead. • Are the wiper blades on your car up to the task of keeping your windshield clear? If not, now is a great time to replace them.

• Check your car’s coolant tank. Is it antifreeze in there? With colder weather not far away, antifreeze is what you need.

• Check & repair the caulking and weather-stripping around the windows and doors of your home.

• Remove your garden hoses from the spigots and get them put away. They won’t last long out in the elements.

• Check your snow blower. Chances are, it hasn’t been touched in months. Start it before you need it.

• Get your patio winter ready. Cover or store any furniture or fragile decorations.

• Inspect your snow shovel. Is it going to last through several shoveling sessions? Best to replace it while you can get out of your driveway without its help.

• Winterize your sprinklers. Broken, frozen pipes and valves will cost you big. When it gets colder, turn off and winterize the sprinkler system.

• Winterize your power equipment. Since they’re going to be out of commission for a while, drain the fuel out of chain saws, generators, lawn mowers and other gas-powered machinery. Run them dry or add fuel conditioner and circulate through the fuel system.

• Drain and cover your swamp cooler. Disconnect the water supply and drain it as well.

• Check your roof for any missing shingles or trouble spots. Now is the time to fix problems, before the rain and snow make things worse.

• Inspect and clean out the rain gutters. Leaves or debris caught in them will lead to headaches later on.

• Don’t wait until its cold to get out the cold weather gear. On a suddenly cold morning, you’ll be glad you thought ahead.

• Keep up with raking your leaves. Too many left on a lawn will smother it and lead to dead areas and increase the chances of mold and other problems.
